The Story Behind Beyond The Pain

Founder & President, Beyond The Pain Organization

Turning Pain Into Purpose, Grief Into Healing, and Loss Into Hope

Beyond The Pain Organization was founded by Tammy Hunter, a mental health advocate, suicide prevention educator, and grief support leader whose mission was born from personal tragedy and transformed into a commitment to helping others heal.

Through lived experience, community outreach, workshops, and advocacy, Tammy works to create safe spaces where individuals and families can find hope, support, resources, and connection. Her goal is simple: to ensure that no one has to walk through pain alone.

My Story

My journey began long before Beyond The Pain was created.

On January 1, 2001, I lost my mother, Ophelia Wallace-Hunter, who died by suicide. Years later, on April 18, 2008, I lost my father, Arthur Lee Hunter, who died by suicide. While these losses were devastating, nothing could have prepared me for the loss of my son, Da'Ntae Terrell Brown, who died by suicide on Christmas Eve in 2024.

These losses changed my life forever. I experienced overwhelming grief, unanswered questions, and the isolation that many survivors of suicide loss know all too well. Through my pain, I realized how many people suffer in silence without the support, understanding, and resources they need.

My pain became my purpose. My loss became a mission to help others find hope, healing, and connection.

From Grief to Purpose

While grief became part of my story, I refused to let it be the end of my story.

I began speaking openly about mental health, grief, trauma, and suicide prevention. I discovered that many people were facing similar struggles yet felt alone, unseen, and unsupported in their journeys.

Beyond The Pain was created to provide education, support groups, workshops, community outreach, and resources for individuals and families facing mental health challenges, grief, trauma, and loss.

My goal is to ensure that no one has to walk through pain alone.

What was meant to break me became the foundation of my purpose.

Our Vision for the Future

The future of Beyond The Pain is rooted in hope.

We envision communities where conversations about mental health are welcomed, where individuals feel supported during difficult times, and where no family has to navigate grief alone.

As Beyond The Pain continues to grow, our goal is to expand workshops, support groups, educational programs, community partnerships, and outreach efforts throughout Chicago and surrounding communities.

Every life matters. Every story matters. Every person deserves support.

Together, we can transform pain into purpose, loss into healing, and hope into action.

Our vision is a future where every person has access to support, every family finds hope, and no one suffers in silence

A Message of Hope

A personal message from Tammy Hunter

If you are struggling, grieving, or feeling alone, please know that there is hope. Healing may not happen overnight, but you do not have to walk through life's challenges by yourself. Beyond The Pain was created to remind you that your story matters, your life matters, and support is available. Together, we can move beyond the pain and toward hope.

You are not alone. There is hope. There is healing.
